Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No', 'No'. (Mt 5:37)

I had a question about abortion. The pro-choice camp had some pretty convincing arguments supporting a woman's right to freedom. How can a Christian intellectually defend the right to life?

OYou have touched upon a very hot topic. Some of the arguments have been given in support of abortion. As Christians we believe God forms us in the womb (Psalm 139:13-14). We must engage in this fight for the helpless. Let me share some of rebuttals to arguments of the pro-abortion folks.

1. "The unborn baby is so small."
A. Does this mean that a one month old baby is less human than a 5 year old? This logic would make Shaquille O'neil worth more me. Size does not determine one's humanness.

2. "The unborn baby has not developed reasoning powers."
A. A one-month old baby does not have reasoning powers as well. If one kills a one month old, they will be imprisoned for murder.

3. "The unborn baby will be born to bad parents"
A. This logic would justify killing a woman who is married to an abusive man. Since her life is miserable- it would be humane to kill her.

4. "It is at the moment of conception a baby is to be recognized as a
human."

A. We are talking simply about location. Making the 8 inch journey down the birth canal makes no difference.

5. "It is the woman's body, the baby is hers to decide."
A. Just over a hundred years ago, blacks were looked upon as "property" also. On March
6, 1857, the Supreme Court, in Dred Scott v. Stanford, ruled that no act of Congress or territorial legislature could make laws banning slavery. The fundamental argument was that slaves are not free and equal persons but the property of their masters. We know the injustice of a person "belonging" to another."

6. "The baby is diagnosed with mental/physical disabilities that will make for an unhappy life. Abortion is the option."
A. Christopher Reeves fell off a horse and is paralyzed from the neck down. Should anyone who injures themselves permanently be killed? I believe all people regardless of health can find joy in life.

7. "What if the mother's life is at stake?"
A. Though theoretically one can argue the value of the mother's life is worth as much as the unborn child, practically this is rarely ever the reason for abortion.
The Alan Guttmacher Institute (the research arm of Planned Parenthood) states: * 1% are victims of incest or rape * 1% had fetal abnormalities * 4% had a doctor who said their health would worsen if they continued the pregnancy * 50% said they didn't want to be a single parent or they had problems in current relationships * 66% stated they could not afford a child *75% said the child would interfere with their lives. The life of the mother is not even an option for abortion.
C. Everett Koop, M.D., formerly the Surgeon General, states that during his 35-plus years of practicing medicine, "Never once did a case come across my practice where abortion was necessary to save a mother's life."
