Soaring to the top of the North American box office, 'Dumb and Dumber To' starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels has already raked in $38.1 million from its debut.

With Red Granite Pictures financing the movie, distribution and marketing has been carried out by Universal.

Universal distribution chief Nikki Rocco had spoken out about the success of the original film which drove them to take on a follow-up film.

"'Dumb and Dumber' was a beloved film on home entertainment, and people wanted to be entertained. It's escapism," Rocco explained.

Narrowly prevailing over former box office top spot holder 'Big Hero 6', the PG-13 comedy film is a direct sequel to the first movie 'Dumb and Dumber' in 1994. While Carrey and Daniels have reprised their roles, Laurie Holden, Kathleen Turner and Rob Riggle have been added to the cast as well.

With Bobby and Peter Farrelly coming back to take on the directorial duties, 'Dumb and Dumber To' follows the story of Lloyd (Carrey) and Harry (Daniels) as they seek out Lloyd's daughter because he badly needs a kidney donor.

Overall, 'Dumb and Dumber To' was found to have appealed to a wide range of audiences including Caucasians and Hispanics. Majority of its viewers have been males; in terms of age, roughly 43 per cent of the audience has been younger than 25.

While 'Dumb and Dumber To' is enjoying its debut at the top of the box office, Disney's 'Big Hero 6' and 'Interstellar' by Christopher Nolan have reached their second weekend and are also sitting comfortably on the next couple of spots.

Coming in at number 2, 'Big Hero 6' raked in $36 million for its second weekend with a sum of $111.7 million from domestic locations alone.

Meanwhile, 'Interstellar' from Paramount and Warner Bros. have earned the number 3 spot for the box office and pulled in $29.2 million this weekend, totaling $97.8 million among domestic locations.

Placing fourth is the romance drama 'Beyond the Lights' from Relativity Media with a $6.2 million haul. Starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Nate Parker, the film follows the love story of a singer and a cop.

2oth Century Fox's 'Gone Girl' rounds up the top five movies for last weekend's box office after it pulled in $4.5 million from 1,959 domestic locations.

Aside from 'Dumb and Dumber To' and 'Beyond the Lights', new openings also drew in moviegoers; these include the wrestling drama 'Foxcatcher' from Sony Pictures, starring Steve Carell and Channing Tatum.

Western film 'The Homesman' starring Tommy Lee Jones and Hilary Swank also opened last week, earning a little over $48,033 from four New York and Los Angeles cinemas.
