‘Q*Bert Rebooted’ Release Date for PS4, PS3, PS Vita Set

Q*Bert

Sony announced through the PlayStation blog that "Q*Bert Rebooted" will be released for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and the PS Vita.

Jason Sorensen, the product manager of Sony's Loon Entertainment, said the game will arrive on Feb. 17 of this year for the North American market and on Feb. 18 in Europe.

"Q*Bert Rebooted" serves as an updated version of the classic "Q*Bert" arcade game. First released in 1982 by the Chicago-based developer Gottlieb, players control the titular character using joysticks. The objective of the game is to change the colors of the pyramid's cubes by controlling Q*Bert to jump on top of them.

For the rebooted version, Sorensen wrote that the game will feature hexagons instead of cubes. New game play modes and enemies will also be added to the game. The new game will be in 3D.

"In addition, there are new features, such as time and score challenges, new enemies with their own unique behaviors, new playable characters, power-ups, traps and gem collecting," he stated in the blog post.

Aside from featuring new game modes, "Q*Bert Rebooted" will also include stages from the original game.

"Q*Bert Rebooted" already debuted on July 8 of 2014 for the Linux, Mac and Windows platforms. It was released through Steam as a downloadable game for $4.99, Polygon reported.

According Sony Vice President Mark Caplan, the tech giant decided to acquire the rights to develop and market a new "Q*Bert" game shortly after the titular character made a cameo appearance in Disney's 2012 computer-animated fantasy-comedy film "Wreck-It Ralph." In the film, Q*Bert appeared as one of the homeless video game characters.

Caplan noted that the re-introduction of "Q*Bert" will certainly appeal to various generations of gamers, Venture Beat reported.

"With renewed interest in 'Q*Bert,' in part due to the cameo in the recent 'Wreck-It Ralph' animated feature film, we are delighted to reintroduce the game and characters to current fans as well as a new generation of gamers who are experiencing 'Q*Bert' for the first time," the Sony executive said in a statement.
