EA Believes Gaming on Tablets Could Overtake Consoles

Electronic Arts announced that it is planning to increase its efforts in developing more games for tablet devices. This is due to the gadget's potential to overtake the popularity of consoles in the gaming industry, according to Game Spot.

EA CFO Blake Jorgensen made the announcement during the 2015 Technology, Internet & Media Conference in San Francisco on Monday. According to the company executive, tablets offer numerous advantages to gamers than traditional platforms.

One of these is the device's portability. Unlike consoles such as the Xbox and PlayStation devices, tablet users are not limited to playing their games inside their rooms. They can simply take their handheld devices and enjoy playing wherever they may be.

Aside from a tablet's handy feature, Jorgensen believes the technology behind the device will improve in the coming years. This will then allow developers to create more appealing games with higher technical requirements for tablets.

"What gets us the most excited is the power, the computing power of mobile devices and the speed at which that it's growing," Jorgensen told attendees of the conference. "What that might mean is that a tablet, three or four years from now, has more power than what a typical console has."

The executive said the combination of the tablet's portability and power can make this device more popular among gamers than today's consoles.

"We're looking for ways that we can essentially blend those two models to have a more immersive but moveable game experience," he said. "Could be in your living room, could be on the bus, or it could be in a friend's house. Much more portable than it is today. And that for us is a huge opportunity."

Despite highlighting the advantages of tablets, Jorgensen assured PlayStation and Xbox users that EA will not abandon its projects for consoles. During the conference, Jorgensen noted that the company is still committed to releasing major titles and installments for popular game franchises for next-gen consoles in the coming years.
