Now that American Horror Story has given a name for its fifth season, which is Hotel, fans can now come up with more concrete theories on what the new series will be based on.
Glamour actually came up with three pretty good ones. The first theory is that the story will focus on Chicago serial killer Dr. Henry Howard Holmes and his Murder Castle.
Dr. Holmes opened the World's Fair Hotel in Chicago in 1893, and it was called a castle by locals because of its immense size, taking over three city blocks.
But according to reports, it had over 100 windowless rooms, doorways that opened only to brick walls, and stairways that lead to nowhere.
What's worse, Dr. Holmes killed around 30 female employees, sometimes by locking them up in his office's bank vault, where they would die by suffocation. He would then send the dead bodies down a chute to the basement.
His gore and terror does not end there since he would dissect the bodies of the victims and even make a profit for it. Dr. Holmes even sold their skeletons to medical schools.
"This type of twisted terror seems right up Murphy's alley, and Holmes gives me similar vibes as Asylum's Dr. Arthur Arden. Plus, there's been an element of doctors or medicine in each of AHS' seasons so far," the author wrote, adding that several of Murphy's past characters and story lines have been based on real life crimes.
The next theory concerns The Garden of Allah Hotel, which opened in Hollywood in 1927. The hotel has served countless famous guests over the years, including Humphrey Bogart, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Lauren Bacall, Marlene Dietrich, and more.
The terror lies in the statement provided to Time by frequent guest Lucius Beebe: "Nothing interrupted the continual tumult that was life at the Garden of Allah. Now and then the men in white came with a van and took somebody away, or bankruptcy or divorce or even jail claimed a participant in its strictly unstately sarabands. Nobody paid any mind." The hotel was demolished in 1959.
According to Glamour, AHS fans have been gung-ho about this theory because there have been many references to it in Freak Show.
"Another major connection stems from Marlene Dietrich, the inspiration for Jessica Lange's Elsa Mars character-and a frequent guest at the Garden of Allah and the star in a 1936 film by the same name," the author added.
The last theory is about the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles, where 21-year-old Elise Lam was sadly found drowned in its water tank in January 2013. It also served several serial killers such as Richard "the Nightstalker" Ramirez and Jack Unterweger. Moreover, it was the last place where Elizabeth Short, more popularly known as the Black Dahlia, was last seen alive.
The author said it works because of "so many reasons, besides the obvious hotel connect." First of all, the Black Dahlia already appeared in an episode of season one (played by Mena Survari). And FX head John Lundgraf did say that the fifth season of AHS will be set in the present day.
