'Ghostbusters' Female Reboot: Director Inspired by Horror Elements in 'The Walking Dead'

The director of the upcoming all-female "Ghostbusters' reboot, Paul Feig, has spoken up about taking inspiration from his favorite zombie apocalypse TV series, "The Walking Dead.'

Despite its paranormal subject, "Ghostbusters' is originally recognized as a comedy classic. As such, this leaves plenty of space for Feig to incorporate actual scary scenes that can bring a certain level of horror to the upcoming reboot.

In an episode of "The Walking Dead' companion series, "Talking Dead', Feig mentioned that he aims to come up with a blockbuster film that is both funny and scary.

"I will say, I was very inspired by this show," Feig said, referring to the AMC horror series and its impact on his take on the upcoming "Ghostbusters.' "What I love is how they play with the danger, they play with the scariness, but also the idea that it's always about gauntlet run."

However, his comments do not necessarily suggest that the new film will be switching its focus from ghosts to zombies, and incorporate more bloody and gruesome scenes.

"And that's something, an element I want to bring to this Ghostbusters reboot is having to get through these various obstacles that are supernatural and all that," Feig shared about integrating the concept of danger in the new film. "I really feed off of The Walking Dead."

Feig's previous films, including the R-rated comedies '21 Jump Street', "The Hangover' series and "Bridesmaids, all attained considerable success in the global box office. However, Feig said that he will have the "Ghostbusters' movie to be geared towards a PG-13 rating to make the most of its audience.

"The Ghostbusters world doesn't need that level of swearing," Feig explained. "We'll have to be PG-13 with this one. I would like to make it R-rated, but I won't. You want the biggest number of people to watch it and not be put off by it."

For the all-female cast of the upcoming remake, 'Bridesmaids' stars Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy have been joined by "Saturday Night Live' regulars Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones.

The new "Ghostbusters' film will hit theaters on July 22, 2016.

Actor Dan Aykroyd, who starred in the original "Ghostbusters' movie, has already shared his sentiments on wanting to return to the franchise if a "conventional third sequel' will be created.
