Why Michelle Rodriguez Wants No Part as New 'Female Green Lantern'

How does the thought of a female Green Lantern grab you?

The 2020 reboot of the disastrous Green Lantern film is now focusing on a female lead, and Michelle Rodriguez has been considered for the role of Hispanic Jessica Cruz. But it seems like Rodriguez gave a flat-out no to the role, saying that she is not interested in portraying the female superhero, according to Cinema Blend.

She gave out a lot of harsh comments about the role of Cruz, and even brushed over some sensitive racial issues.

"That's the dumbest thing I ever heard. I think it's so stupid because of this whole minorities in Hollywood thing. It's so stupid. Stop stealing all the white people's superheroes. Make up your own. What's up with that?" she said.

But after making that statement, Rodriguez felt the need to explain her side, and she posted a video on her Facebook account saying she "stuck her foot in her mouth" once again.

"There are many cultures in Hollywood that are not white that can come up with their own mythology. We all get it from the same reservoir of life, the fountain of life - it doesn't matter what culture you come from," she said.

So Rodriguez said that instead of trying to turn a girl character into a guy or the other way around, or instead of trying to turn a white character into a black character or a Latin character, people from Hollywood should just develop their own mythology.

"It's time to stop-stop trying to take what's already there and try to fit a culture into it. I think that it's time for us to write our own mythology and our own story, every culture. So that's what I really meant and I'm sorry if it came off rude or stupid. It's not what I meant," she said.

The casting choices for the Big Seven characters of The Justice League Part One is almost complete, save for one. Henry Cavill will be Superman, Ben Affleck will be Batman, Gal Gadot will portray Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa will be playing Aquaman, Ezra Miller will be the Flash, and Ray Fisher will be Cyborg, so the only thing that is missing is Green Lantern.

Rodriguez's scathing comments came after several other superheroes had changed their ethnicities for the big screen, including Nick Fury of the Avengers, played by Samuel L Jackson; Heimdall from the Thor saga, played by Idris Elba; and Michael B Jordan's take on the Human Torch in the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot. The new Spider-Man character is also expected to have a new ethnicity.
