Facebook, Spotify & More: The Top Apps that Drain Your Phone's Battery and Performance

Smartphone owners just love to run all kinds of apps on their mobile devices, but dread the times when the battery life drops or the phone itself begins to lag and perform slow.

Opening and running certain apps that call for a large amount of battery power and memory usage can have a significant impact on the overall performance of smartphones, thereby affecting user experience.

Aside from battery life and performance, users have also identified data consumption as one of the main challenges in using smartphones and running apps.

Although a number of individuals make use of the unlimited data plans, numerous owners are currently limited to a specific amount of data every month. Many claimed that streaming services are often the underlying reason behind large data consumption. However, this may not always be the case.

AVG, a popular manufacturer specializing in antivirus software, generated a list of the top ten apps that instantly use up battery power and can have a negative impact on a smartphone's performance.

A number of apps that are typically expected to affect battery, performance and storage showed up on the final list. Interestingly, there were some surprising apps that are not often associated with drained battery life and phone lagging.

Topping the AVG's list of performance draining apps was online social networking service Facebook followed by music streaming service Spotify at number two.

Next, photo- and video-sharing service Instagram ranked at number three while photo sharing and messaging service Path was placed at number four. Amazon's shopping app took the number five spot.

Other apps in the top ten list included the messaging and calling app LINE as well as The Daily Mail news app, which may come as a surprise to many as it merely provides informative content that are not expected to greatly affect phone performance as compared to streaming and photo-sharing services.

Aside from limiting app use, a possible way of reducing the negative impact of these apps on a smartphone's battery, performance and storage is to open the online version of their websites.

By directly connecting through the Internet and using the mobile version of their sites, these can aid in retaining battery life and avoiding slow performance. Moreover, a similar user experience can still be achieved.
