Vin Diesel has already said that Furious 8 is a sure thing, especially since dear friend and fellow actor, the late Paul Walker, really wanted it to happen, and now director James Wan is hinting that the eighth installment to the franchise just might be its last.
According to The Daily Beast, Wan said that he has "no doubt" that Universal Studios will push through with the sequel (or sequels), as long as people express the desire to see the films, but his statement suddenly became contradictory when he said that "it would be amazing" if director Justin Lin "closed it out."
Directing the seventh installment really took a huge toll on Wan, especially after the death of Walker. He said that he had to put on a brave face for the whole team in order to finish the movie, but he is nonetheless proud of how things turned out.
As for his future in the franchise, he said that it "really depends on what Universal wants to do moving forward."
"They really have to think about how they want to proceed with it, and in a lot of ways the next bunch would almost be like finding a new start. If they're smart about it, they could potentially reinvent the wheel again," he said.
Wan added that the studio knows the beating that he took to get the movie done, so they would definitely understand if he took a break from working on the highly popular car action movie. For now, the director says that people will just have to wait and see what Universal's plans are and how quickly they jump into the next movie.
He will be going back to his roots as he works on the new horror flick Conjuring 2, and he expressed happiness being a "father" to a movie again, since there were a lot of "parents" on Furious 7.
"After Furious 7, I think doing Conjuring 2 is going to feel like a holiday break. I never realized how much I cherished having creative freedom. You don't realize how much you miss something until you don't really have it," he said.
Wan appreciates being given creative freedom, and this is what he gets when he works on horror films. He will be working once again with the original Conjuring stars Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as they follow up on the story of a poltergeist that haunted a U.K. council house back in the 1970s.
