American actress Gina Rodriguez from the highly acclaimed series Jane the Virgin will soon be starring in Alloy Entertainment's military romance called Purple Hearts.
Directorial duties has been given to Ben Lewin while Elysa Dutton and Leslie Morgenstein of Alloy Features will produce alongside Amy Baer with Gidden Media, according to Variety.
The script is written by Kyle Jarrow and tells the tale of an aspiring musician and a soldier who find themselves falling in love despite getting married under false pretenses. Rodriguez will be playing the aspiring musician, while no other details have been provided yet about her character and co-star.
Rodriguez is best known for her role as Majo Tenorio in the musical drama Filly Brown, where she won an Imagen Award, as well as Beverly in the popular soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful. In the CW comedy drama Jane the Virgin, she plays Jane Villanueva, and she even won a Golden Globe Award for her role.
Jane the Virgin is a loose adaptation of the Venezuelan telenovela Juana la Virgen created by Perla Farias, and it has been renewed back in January 11, 2015 for a second season.
It tells the story of a deeply religious and hardworking young Latina who vowed to save her virginity until she gets married to her detective boyfriend, but things started crumbling down for Jane when a doctor mistakenly artificially inseminates her during a check-up.
To make matters worse, the biological donor of Jane's baby is a married man, who just so happens to be the new owner of the hotel where she works. The donor is also a married man, former playboy, and cancer survivor who once was Jane's teenage crush.
Aside from those television series mentioned, Rodriguez has also worked on movie roles such as Lionsgate's Deepwater Horizon just last month, and her other works include Sleeping with the Fishes and the upcoming drama Sticky Notes with Ray Liotta.
She was also offered a role in Lifetime's Devious Maids but she turned it down.
Not much is known about Rodriguez, save for the fact that her older sister Iveliss Rodriguez Simon is an investment banker while her middle sister Rebecca is a doctor. It was Iveliss who provided funds for Rodriguez's education at NYU Tisch School of Arts. Moreover, she has been suffering from a thyroid condition ever since she was 19 years old.
