Meriam Ibrahim, the Christian Sudanese mother who had been imprisoned for her faith, left Rome after her week-long stay and finally arrived in the U.S. at the Philadelphia International Airport Thursday afternoon. She is scheduled to leave for Manchester, New Hampshire Thursday night.
On arrival to Manchester, Ibrahim, her husband Daniel Wani, and their two children are set to settle with Gabriel Wani, Daniel Wani's brother, according to World Magazine. The Daily Mail reports that Daniel Wani already has a one-person apartment in Manchester in which the family will now be living in. The family is expected to receive a warm welcome from the local Sudanese Evangelical Church in Manchester.
The Daily Mail also reported that Ibrahim expressed hints of fear in starting her new life. "I'm a bit scared to leave Rome. We have been very happy here. We have felt like a real family," Mail quoted Ibrahim. "And now I don't know what to expect but at least we will all be together."
"My brother will help us I'm sure, and the Christian community in New Hampshire will be with us. The future is always unknown but I am optimistic," said Wani, according to the Daily Mail.
Ibrahim had been imprisoned on charges of apostasy in Sudan, and gave birth to her second child during her imprisonment. Her story gained much international attention as a result of the violation of her human rights and restriction of religious freedom.
