Freddie Roach said that he wants Manny Pacquiao to call it quits after his upcoming fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 2 at MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Roach believes Pacquiao will have nothing to prove after beating Mayweather on Saturday. And if he will have it his way, he wants to see his prized fighter focus on his political career and become the president of the Philippines, where a presidential election will take place next year.
"I would ask him to quit because there's nothing else out there," Roach recently told MLive. "I think it would be a great way to retire and I think would be a great way to help Manny try to become president of his country, because I think he's getting close to that next year."
Roach said he knows Pacquiao has a good heart and the boxing superstar wants to help his countrymen and his country improve. The veteran trainer said he admires Pacquiao for his kindness.
"I think he enjoys that, he likes helping people, and he wants to make his home a better place," Roach added. "He really does. So I kind of like that for him."
Pacquiao is currently the congressman of his native Sarangani province in the Philippines and previous reports indicated that the former pound-for-pound king is determined to run for higher position next year.
But before dealing with his political career, Pacquiao will be facing the biggest challenge of his boxing career as he is set to face Mayweather on Saturday night in a fight that is expected to break existing boxing records.
Pacquiao, who will be defending his World Boxing Organization welterweight title, is considered as underdog heading into the fight, but Roach is confident the Filipino boxing icon will defy the odds.
Roach, who also said that the upcoming fight will be the biggest of his career as a trainer, said that training camp went very well and he is convinced they have the perfect fight plan to hand Mayweather the first defeat of his boxing career in the Cinco de Mayo weekend showdown.
"A win here is so essential to me," Roach said in a news conference. "I've talked a lot, said a lot of things about Floyd. We have to win the fight. Have to. And I think we will."
