Power Rangers Reboot Moved to 2017 Release Date

For die-hard Power Rangers fans, the wait to see their favourite superheroes on the big screen might have to last a bit more longer since Lionsgate has just announced that the upcoming Mighty Morphin Power Rangers film reboot has been moved from its original release date of July 22, 2016 to January 13, 2017.

According to Comic Book Movie, the original release date is already very crowded, given the return of Matt Damon's Jason Bourne, the fifth Ice Age animated film, Sony's rebooted female Ghostbusters, and Warner Bros' Suicide Squad will be released around that date, so Lionsgate has decided to switch its intended release date.

It might seem a smart move to release the movie on January, a month that has been traditionally reserved for adult-centered films, but that does not mean that commercial films will be well-received then.

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers will open just a week after Tom Cruise's drug-smuggling drama called Mena, which will have the actor team up again with Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman, and Academy Awards buzzes have already been surrounding the film.

The Power Rangers was originally a long-running television show which lasted for 22 seasons. It started in 1993 and followed the lives of teenage superheroes Jason Lee Scott (Red Ranger), Trini Kwan (Yellow Ranger), Billy Cranston (Blue Ranger), Kimberly Hart (Pink Ranger), and Zack Taylor (Black Ranger). They are battling the evil forces of Rita Repulsa and her minions Gooldar, Squatt, Baboo, and Finster, and her superior Lord Zedd.

The highly popular characters were played by Austin St. John, Walter Jones, David Yost, Amy Jo Johnson, and Thuy Trang. For the rebooted movie, no word has been provided yet about the cast.

Roberto Orci was originally chosen to produce, while Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz will be writing the script. Orci planned for the film to continue the series, while the original Power Rangers cas are all open for a cameo in the reboot.

On September 19, 2014, however, Orci announced that he will no longer be producing the film because of his commitment with the Star Trek series, so on September 24 that same year, Jason David Frank said that he will probably be involved in the Power Rangers film. He later said that filming will start sometime in 2015. Moreover, on April 10, 2015, news surfaced that Dean Israelite is being eyed to direct the film.
