Samsung Galaxy S6 & S6 Edge Update Arrives

Samsung Galaxy S6

A few days ago, Samsung released an update to fix the performance problems that occur in its Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge phones which it confirmed just a week before they found a solution to the problem.

The G920FXXU1AODG firmware update was delivered over-the-air and its size is 138.32 MB. It didn't really made the phones faster but rather address how it manages memory during multitasking.

Before the announcement of the update, complaints flooded Samsung's doors saying that their newly-purchased Galaxy S6 phone had been either began slowing down or apps started to crash after several days of use.

An earlier report from Forbes said Samsung made a subtle confirmation at its UK Facebook page about the memory mismanagement affecting the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.

Samsung explained that what should happen is that every time an app or service is used, the  memory it takes up should be released once the app or service is left unused. But what really happens is that the app or service still takes up RAM even when it's not used.

As more apps are used, more memory is consumed until phone operation slows down or crashes.

The problem was not noticeable upon first use of the phone but only after a few days.

The solution then was to either got to the multitasking card menu and tap the 'Close All' to stop all running apps and free up some memory, or to reboot the phone.

Owners of Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge phone are advised to update their firmware from the phone's settings menu.

While the update was very much appreciated, critics are wondering why Google wasn't able to come up with a solution to the problem which had been present in the  5.0.1, 5.0.2 (which the Galaxy S6 uses) and 5.1 versions of Android Lollipop.

In addition, the same issue is said to be present in Google Nexus devices as well.

Critics say Android 5.1.1 update would hopefully fix the memory leak problem. Forbes also reported that a Galaxy S6 Edge owner was given an OTA of the new version of Lollipop by T-Mobile at the XDA Developers Forum. However, there was no specific details given about the major improvements of the update.

Since it's release last April of this year, the Samsung Galaxy S6 is reported to be one of the fastest smartphone available in the market as of late. The 5.1-inch LTE device has an octa-core processor with 3GB RAM, 16-megapixels rear and 5-megapixel front cameras.
