Anne Hathaway is 'Awed' to Play Robert De Niro's Boss in 'The Intern'

'Princess Diaries' film franchise star Anne Hathaway

People can still remember American Anne Hathaway as the naive intern Andy Sachs in the movie The Devil Wears Prada who desperately seeks to earn the admiration of her boss Miranda Priestly, played by acting powerhouse Meryl Streep.

And now nine years after the release of The Devil Wears Prada, Hathaway is back in a movie that highlights the dynamics between a boss and intern. Only this time, Hathaway is the boss - to Robert De Niro's character, no less!

In their upcoming film The Intern, De Niro plays Ben, a retiree who is desperate to join the work force again after realizing that retirement isn't all it's cracked up to be. Hathaway, meanwhile, is Jules - an aggressive founder of a fashion website who allows De Niro to work as her intern as part of her community outreach program.

According to Hathaway, she is pretty "awed" to boss around the 71-year-old two-time Oscar winner in The Intern, adding that his character is "like her angel" in the film.

"Jules is super smart - a little intense and uptight with a brain that never shuts off," she shared with PEOPLE. "Ben (De Niro) comes into her life and understands her immediately. Moreover, he likes all the things about her other people find strange and a little off-putting."

Hathaway added that working with De Niro was such an "excellent" experience, and despite his many successes and accomplishments in acting, the veteran actor was down to earth and easy to work with.

"I've been a fan of his for such a long time and was so excited to work with him," Hathaway said. "All of us on set were really awed by him but he's so sweet and unassuming, and a little goofy, that we all relaxed eventually."

Going back to her role in The Devil Wears Prada, Hathaway revealed that she actually interned at Christie's so as to better understand what it's like to be an intern.

"I just got coffee for everyone, got to look at awesome art and reorganized the reference library," Hathaway said. "I'm a nerd, so that was fun."

Aside from The Devil Wears Prada, Hathaway has starred in several films including The Princess Diaries, Les Miserables, Batman: The Dark Knight Rises, Alice in Wonderland, Bride Wars, Valentine's Day, Get Smart, Becoming Jane, Brokeback Mountain, and Ella Enchanted, among many others.
The Intern will be hitting theatres on September 25, 2015.
