Gas prices are at a record high as Memorial Day weekend looms closer. Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that recognizes veterans who died in military service. The annual holiday occurs on the last Monday of May. This year the day falls on Monday, May 25. Christianity Daily compiled a list of average gas prices taken from the American Automobile Association (AAA).

According to reports by AAA, the Midwest's rise in price per gallon is due to production issues. One of which occurred recently at an ExxonMobil refinery plant in Channahon, Illinois. Clearly seen on the above USA national gas price heat map, the West Coast has the most expensive oil prices in comparison to other states throughout the country. Current oil prices in the West Coast have risen due to tight oil supplies.

"Consumers are paying a nickel per gallon more than one week ago and 26 cents more per gallon than one month ago," stated Michael Green, AAA Public Relations Manager. "The global oil market remains oversupplied, but market watchers are closely monitoring U.S. production and the recent outbreak of violence in the Middle East for any impact that could shift this balance."

Oil traders continue to watch for shifts and balances in the world's supply and demand for oil. In the meanwhile, families, friends, and individuals who have Memorial Day off from work or school may need to calculate the cost of road trips this weekend. Gas Buddy has a Trip Cost Calculator amongst other tools to help determine how much it will cost to travel on the road.
