20th Century Fox has unveiled the first trailer and poster for its upcoming sequel "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials', starring Dylan O' Brien who portrays the lead character Thomas in the dystopian sci-fi movie series.

Based on the young-adult post-apocalyptic trilogy by James Dashner, the first movie titled "The Maze Runner' follows the story of Thomas as he ventures out into the new world of huge, mechanical walls and get locked inside with strange, vicious creatures known as the Grievers.

Along with other teenage boys and a mysterious girl named Teresa, Thomas tries to stay alive by solving the Maze; after succeeding in their quest, the group of teenagers is rescued and finds out that they have been involved in an experiment being carried out by the Creators.

"I think it's safe to say the maze trials were a complete success," a woman speaks through a voiceover at the beginning of the "Scorch Trials' trailer. "It's too soon to say, but they could be the key to everything. It's time now to begin phase two."

In the sequel, Thomas and his fellow maze survivors have new discoveries, including the existence of the Scorch, the most burned-out part of the world. The group is also obliged to cross the region while WICKED puts forward challenges and ensures that the odds are against these teenagers.

"The Scorch Trials' is then expected to highlight the tests of friendship, loyalty and survival among the group of survivors.

Aside from Dylan O' Brien, the upcoming installment also stars Thomas Brodie-Sangster ("Game of Thrones'), Kaya Scodelario ("Skins', "Now Is Good'), Will Poulter ("Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader'), Patricia Clarkson ("Friends with Benefits'), Rosa Salazar ("Insurgent'), Aidan Gillen ("The Dark Knight Rises', "Game of Thrones') and Giancarlo Esposito ("Breaking Bad').

"Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials' will be released in 3D, 2D, and IMAX theaters on September 18, 2015. The first movie, which was developed with a budget of $34 million, earned a total of $340.8 million at the international box office.

The "Maze Runner' movie series gains momentum as similar films based on young-adult fiction novels have either been put to an end or have unknown release dates in the future.

While the "Twilight' saga has been finished, there have been no news on "Percy Jackson' and "Chronicles of Narnia.' Moreover, "The Hunger Games' is set to have its final film on Nov. 20, 2015.

"Harry Potter' will also have its prequel trilogy that will have a debut before 2016 ends. Even a "Mortal Instruments' sequel has not been announced yet. As such, young-adult fiction fans may have to look forward first to the second "Maze Runner' installment that is up for a debut on September.
