James Gunn has been taking to social media to offer updates on the production of the upcoming "Guardians of the Galaxy' sequel. This weekend, the 44-year-old director carried out another Q&A session on Periscope, a live streaming app, through which he discussed the follow-up film to the space adventure.

Gunn revealed that the team is in the process of casting newcomers and that he might have a new character to include in the sequel. Termed as the "new Guardian', the helmer shared that he has already been informally reaching out to an actor about portraying the role.

There have been no details on which individual Gunn was referring to and which role the actor would be taking.

It has been commonly speculated that one of these potential Guardians would be Yondu, played by Michael Rooker, who had been an original member of the group as based on the comics.

Meanwhile, Gunn also mentioned that he will bring in a new character, which he previously referred to as his "favorite." One major character that is expected to be on board "Guardians of the Galaxy 2' is Peter Quill's father.

Furthermore, the director says he will not be following the comic books, hence the possibility of Spartax's J'son being absent in this movie. On the other hand, he did mention the increased chances of having more female roles in 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2.'

"One of my true hopes is that we can have at least two women in the next iteration of the Guardians," Gunn previously told Screenrant.

For such female leads, these may include Phyla-Vell, who is quite new to the comics and is known as the daughter of Mar-Vell, who is the original Captain Marvel. In the comics, she and Drax are good friends and is the love interest of Moondragon.

Daughter of Drax the destroyer, Moondragon was believed to have been dead but was actually saved by Thanos' father and was sent to the planet Titan where she obtained her superpowers.

Last April, Gunn also expressed his excitement about "new things" being incorporated in "Guardians of the Galaxy 2.'

"Listen, I'm still excited about Star-Lord's character and where he goes," Gunn shared. "At its heart, Guardians is a story about families, and if the first film was about him and his mother, this is a story about fathers. So it's exciting to go there."

"Guardians of the Galaxy 2' is set to hit cinemas on May 5, 2017.
