Colin Trevorrow Talks About the Indominus Rex: It's An Abomination and a Killer

Jurassic World

Jurassic World's newest dinosaur, the Indominus Rex might be a work of fiction (and special effects!) but director Colin Trevorrow says that the 50-foot long and 18 foot high dinosaur is actually "an abomination and a killer."

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Trevorrow said that the Indominus Rex "was meant to embody our worst tendencies. We're surrounded by wonder and yet we want more. And we want it bigger, faster, louder, better."

In the movie, corporate groups asked people what they wanted to see in the park, and based on their answers, they created the Indominus Rex - a smart, mean killing machine.

According to him, the dinosaur is a hybrid of specific dinosaurs with great movie names like the Giganotosaurus and Majungasaurus, as well as other animals that exist in the world today. He added that people live in a "cult of the upgrade" right now and that is why they needed to create something cool that will make all the other animals in the park "obsolete."

The Indominus Rex is also a classic villain just like Frankenstein, Darth Vader, and Captain Hook. "Indominus sort of makes the dinosaurs feel like real animals. It's an abomination that must be exterminated," he said.

When asked how fans would feel about having synthetic dinosaurs in the story as compared to the "real" ones found in Jurassic Park, Trevorrow answered: "I know there's a lot of both fans and people who love movies that are frustrated that we would have anything but real dinosaurs in the film. But to me that's the whole point."

It's a thrill to direct a Jurassic Park film, and a great honor, he said, and what really excited him was the fact that there were six or seven genres rolled into one in Jurassic World.

"What is it-it's like a sci-fi adventure horror romantic comedy thriller? It's a lot. For me the challenge was doing a movie that balanced all those tones. That's what I challenged myself to do as a filmmaker. This was the next level opportunity to do that," he said.

The Jurassic World movie was so highly anticipated that the Indominus Rex has even been leaked through merchandising. Trevorrow said that they failed to keep the movie "in a cage," but he honestly does not mind.

"We failed. People have seen the animal. And to me, it's not that I don't wish we could've kept it a secret. Sure I do. But to me the exciting part of this movie is what happens and how it happens," he said. "So it's okay."
