iPhone 6S Updates & Specs: Apple Smartphone’s Camera to Get Sony’s RGBW Technology for Low-Light Photography?

Various sources are reporting that Apple is working on equipping its upcoming iPhone 6S's 12-megapixel camera with RGBW technology from Sony.

Although this can be considered as a minor detail in the smartphone's camera specs, it can significantly help its sensor capture quality images even in low-light conditions, according to Ubergizmo.

It was previously reported that Apple has dropped the 8-megapixel shooter with RGB sensor in exchange for a 12-megapixel camera for its upcoming smartphone. This is a huge step for the Cupertino-based tech giant because it has been using 8-megapixel cameras since 2011 with the launch of the iPhone 4S. Even its latest releases, the iPhone 6 and its 6 Plus counterpart, sported the same camera spec.

But based on a report by Chinese news site Feng, it seems Apple is ready to move forward by utilizing a 12-megapixel camera with Sony's RGBW sensor.

The main difference between the RGB and RGBW sensors is that the latter makes use of an additional white subpixel, BGR has learned. When taking snapshots, this is added to the traditional red, green and blue subpixel roster to create brighter images.

The combination of this subpixel setup enables cameras to capture images with overall better quality even when taken in non-optimal lighting conditions.

In addition, since all of this is done by the camera's sensor, it does not add to the consumption of the smartphone's battery.

As for the mobile device's other specs, the iPhone 6S will reportedly arrive in 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch display variants, according to Apple Insider. It will also be equipped with Force Touch Technology, which is similar to the pressure-based control system found in the Apple Watch. The device is expected to be unveiled during this year's fall season.

However, keep in mind that despite these detailed reports, Apple still holds the final word regarding the actual specs of the iPhone 6S and its camera. In other words, it is still possible that Apple might change its direction regarding the quality of the shooter and the device's overall functions.
