Talk about girl power: According to reports, Angelina Jolie and her good friend Charlize Theron might be working together on the upcoming "Captain Marvel" film by Marvel Studios.

There have already been early rumors that Jolie is being eyed as a candidate for female directors of the film, but now, a source told OK! Magazine that Jolie will not only be directing it, but she is also choosing Theron to star in what would be the first female-superhero led movie.

"Marvel has been courting Angie to direct the project and Charlize is a clear fan favorite for the starring role. If Charlize were to get the part, Angie would almost certainly sign on to work with her new pal," the source revealed.

The term "fan favorite" might be a stretch though, according to Cinema Blend, since there are other actresses who are being pushed by fans to star as Carol Danvers in "Captain Marvel" - Jessica Chastain, Emily Blunt, and Katheryn Winnick.

However, Theron would be a good choice too, especially after she impressed action fans for her role as Furiosa in George Miller's "Mad Max: Fury Road."

Jolie, on the other hand, is an interesting choice as director for a female superhero movie. The actress has earlier worked on big-screen dramas such as "In the Land of Blood and Honey" and "Unbroken," so it would be a huge shift for her to create a comic book movie. However, Jolie's skill in exemplifying the strength of the human spirit amidst trials and pain will provide a good emotional touch to Marvel's female-centric film.

For its part, Forbes does not think that Jolie needs to pursue directing "Captain Marvel." Getting Jolie to direct it would win the studio more publicity, but writer Scott Mendelson hopes that they choose some other female director and get her to shine in the movie.

"In an era when female directors are lucky enough to be regularly employed, Jolie has used her capital and star power to become a solid director and make the kind of films that we all claim to want more of. In other words, she's the last female filmmaker on the planet that needs a gig directing Marvel's 'Captain Marvel,'" he noted.

The filmmaking job for "Captain Marvel" will undoubtedly garner recognition and open countless opportunities for the person who lands the job, Mendelson added, and it is one Jolie does not really need.
