'Spider-Man' Cast: Asa Butterfield Is Out, Tom Holland and Charlie Plummer Being Eyed to Portray the Webslinger

'Ender's Game' actor Asa Butterfield

After reports that Asa Butterfield has signed on to the upcoming "Spider-Man' reboot, news comes that the actor is no longer being considered to take on the titular role for the highly anticipated film.

According to TheWrap film reporter Jeff Sneider, who attended the Meet the Movie Press podcast this week, Butterfield is not included in the list of the top three finalists anymore to star in the MCU reboot.

Although the "Ender's Game' actor was initially thought to have been the top contender to beat, Sneider claimed that he has been told of the actors who are on the top of the list to become the new Spider-Man.

These include Tom Holland ("How I Live Now'), Charlie Plummer ("Boardwalk Empire') and Matthew Lintz ("Pixels'). Sneider also reported that Marvel's choice is Plummer while Sony is eyeing Holland, which means that Marvel and Sony are "at odds" over who will be portraying the famous web-slinger.

Rumors that linked Butterfield with the role have gone viral during the past month after Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige expressed his preference for the "Spider-Man' reboot to follow the hero's experiences while in school.

In the more recent "Spider-Man' movies, the role of Peter Parker was taken on by Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield. However, during the time that they were playing the friendly neighborhood hero, their Spider-men failed to become associated with the Avengers as their movies were produced by Sony and not by Marvel Studios.

Now, as Sony lends out Spider-man to Marvel Studios, the superhero will be featured in upcoming "Avengers' films; in particular, his first appearance will be alongside Captain America and Iron Man in the highly-anticipated "Captain America: Civil War' that is scheduled to hit cinemas next year.

Peter Parker played a key role in the Civil War comic book series when he accepted his identity as Spider-man years after keeping his superpowers in secrecy.

In the upcoming "Captain America' movie, its story will continue from where "Avengers: Age of Ultron' ended.

Steve Rogers has called on the help of a new team of Avengers to carry out their mission of protecting humanity. The international authorities and a new villain will put pressure on the superheroes to take sides while cracking down on their mission.

Set for an official U.S. release on May 6, 2016, the third "Captain America' installment is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, who previously worked on "Captain America: The Winter Soldier' and "Community.'
