Majority of Americans Believe God Gave U.S. a "Special Role" in History, but that U.S. Is Not Setting a Good Moral Example

A recent poll found that a majority of Americans still believe that "God has granted America a special role in human history."

62 percent of those who participated in the Public Religious Research Institute survey said that they believe America has been granted a special role in history, while 33 percent disagreed. The study, released on Tuesday, said that the numbers have remained relatively the same, with 62 percent of Americans agreeing with the statement in 2012 as well.

In particular, conservatives are nearly twice as likely to agree with that statement, the study showed. 80 pecent of conservatives agreed, while only 45 percent of liberals did.

Among religious groups, white evangelical Protestants were most likely to agree with the statement, with 83 percent agreeing in the survey. 73 percent of non-white Protestants, 70 percent of Catholics, and 56 percent of white mainline Portestants agreed.

Despite these findings, the poll also found that a majority also believes that America is not setting a good moral example for the rest of the world. 53 percent of Americans disagreed with the statement that the U.S. is setting a good moral example, while 43 percent agreed. The results were relatively equally divided along partisan lines as well. 49 percent of Democrats said they believe the U.S. is setting a good moral example, while 44 percent of Republicans said the same.

The amount of Americans who believe that America is a Christian nation is also on the decline, according to the study. 35 percent of Americans said they believe America was a Christian nation in the past and is still one today, showing a decline from 42 percent who agreed with that statement in 2010. 45 percent said the U.S. was a Christian nation in the past but is no longer one today. 14 percent believe that the U.S. has never been a Christian nation.
