The U.S. and Republic of Korea Navy are planning for a joint military exercise titled the UFG or "Ulji Freedom Guardian". The exercises will take place in South Korean seas from the 17th to 18th of August. The North Korean military (KPA) officially dubbed these training programs as acts that threaten their nation.

The KPA delivered an official statement that had received authorization from the high commanders of the Peoples' Army and called the joint exercises as "a practices for the invasion of North Korea by the American imperialists and their South Korean pawns". The statement went as far as to assert that the U.S. and South Korean militaries are planning and preparing for a preemptive nuclear strike against the DPRK.

The North Korean military continued to criticize the U.S. and South Korea for the training exercises that will almost literally be taking place at their door step. They went on to state that they deserve to be destroyed and defeated and all their locations of operations and South Korean cities will be turned to ashes. They went far as to state that the "American Empire" and their South Korean "puppets" will pay the price for these ruthless actions with blood.

Meanwhile, North Korea's Labor Newspaper criticized South Korea's president Geun-hye Park for allowing the military to carry out such training programs only a few weeks before the opening of the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.

In preparation for the UFG, U.S. destroyers have already entered the South Korean port of Busan.
