An executive from HTC confirmed via Twitter that the Android 5.1 Lollipop update for the network carrier's One M9 handset is scheduled to arrive today.
He also noted that owners of T-Mobile's One M9 can also expect to receive the same major firmware update within the next few days, 9to5Google reported.
The announcement regarding the arrival of the Android 5.1 Lollipop update for the HTC One M9 was made by Mo Versi, the Taiwanese tech firm's vice president of product management.
According to the executive, AT&T will begin the update's roll out for HTC's current flagship smartphone today. Some of the features users can expect in the update are related to the device's 20-megapixel rear camera.
"HTC One M9 AT&T owners," he tweeted. "We have received technical approval on Lollipop OS 5.1 which includes camera improvements. OTA to start on 7/15!"
Shortly after posting the announcement, Versi responded to a question by a user regarding the status of the update for the HTC One M9's T-Mobile variant. He then confirmed that Android 5.1 Lollipop update is scheduled to arrive for the carrier's One M9 users on July 20.
However, as seen in previous roll outs, the launch of the latest Lollipop update through AT&T and T-Mobile will most probably be conducted in stages. This means that not all users will be able to upgrade the firmware of their One M9 devices at the same time.
But since the roll out is already underway, at least for AT&T customers, users can expect to get the update within the next few days. They will be informed regarding the update's availability through a notification.
Aside from the camera improvements for the One M9 as mentioned by Versi, the update also comes with various enhancements and bug fixes. These include better user interface for HTC's Sense system and customizable display themes, according to Gotta Be Mobile.
The Android 5.1 Lollipop update also features a multi-user mode which allows multiple individuals to create their own accounts on a single device and improvements to the device's battery life.
In addition, one of the major features of the update is a patch for the memory leak issue. For the past weeks, many users have complained about their device's crashing and apps not loading properly because of this problem.
HTC officially released the One M9 in April of this year. The company's flagship device, which features a 5-inch display and the Snapdragon 810 processor from Qualcomm, came with the stock Android 5.0 Lollipop OS.
