Sony Mobile is giving Xperia Z3 users a chance to test out its new project dubbed as the Sony Android Concept.

Although details about the project remain unclear, various hints suggest that the company might be preparing to unveil a next generation operating system.

Currently, the project is still in its beta phase and will only be available for Xperia Z3 users residing in Sweden. Android Authority pointed out that Sony Mobile may have decided to launch the Sony Android Concept exclusively in Sweden since its research and development department is located there.

The project's trial period will be held from July 27 to September 13 of this year. Those who wish to participate may do so by signing up through the Sony Android Concept's website.

As to the exact nature of the project, Sony Mobile remained tight lipped about it. The company only mentioned that it will provide a new approach on Sony's current user experience.

"Sony's Android concept is a new initiative for Sony users that have a passion for innovation and the latest technology," the company wrote. "As a Sony user, you have the opportunity to trial a new concept Android software build for Xperia Z3."

"The initiative is all about letting you - our users - evaluate the software, so we can acquire feedback to improve the experience based on what you like and what you don't," Sony Mobile added.

Although the company's latest initiative is based on the Android software, Sony mentioned that it was specifically designed for the Xperia Z3. In addition, the project is focused on a new version of Sony's user interface.

Based on these details, the project may not necessarily be about Google's latest version of its operating system, the Android M.

Instead, as speculated by various sources, the Sony Android Concept project might actually be in preparation for a new version of Xperia UI. This is probably the main reason why the company chose its high-end flagship device, the Xperia Z3, as the testing stage for the new software.

As mentioned by Sony, the feedback that will be submitted by the testers will be used to improve its upcoming software.

Sony, however, did not provide a timeline as to when all users will be able to use the software. However, since it is already in its beta phase, this indicates that the project is moving forward and could come out in the near future.

It might also debut as the operating system of a mysterious device simply codenamed as Sony E5663, which is rumored to be unveiled at this year's IFA event happening in September.
