Sony Mobile announced that it is currently preparing to roll out the Android 5.1 Lollipop update for a number of its devices including the Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z1 Compact.

The announcement came days after the company seeded the same firmware update version for the Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet.

According to the company's post on the Sony Mobile blog, the latest Lollipop update will come with various new enhancements and features designed to improve the overall performance and interface of its devices.

For instance, with the update, users will have more control options for the volume, notifications and silent mode functions.

The firmware upgrade is also expected to come with additional camera improvements particularly for the Superior Auto Mode. With the update, users will be able to take more detailed and focused snapshots.

In addition, updating the mentioned Xperia devices to the Android 5.1 Lollipop will also benefit LinkedIn app users. Through the update, they'll be able to synchronize their contact details from the professional social networking app with their Calendar app.

Another major feature of the upgrade is its SmartWear integration. Those who own Sony's SmartWatch 3 will be able to use the wearable device as a remote shutter when taking selfies with their smartphones.

The company did not mention exactly when the update for the Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z1 Compact will arrive. But, as mentioned by Sony in the blog post dated July 21, users can expect to receive the update within the next few weeks.

However, like in previous roll outs, not everyone will be able to get it at the same time since the update will be conducted in stages. Those who are eligible to receive it will be alerted through a notification.

After the roll out for the Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z1 Compact has been conducted, Soy has another set of Xperia devices in line to get the same Lollipop update. This group includes the Xperia T2 Ultra, Xperia C3, Xperia M2 and Xperia M2 Aqua.

Based on Sony's schedule, it seems the company is rolling out the update first for its older devices. There are no details yet as to when the update will hit the Xperia E4, which was officially released in March of this year, according to Yibada.

Despite being a new device, Sony's new 5-inch handset only came with the rather outdated Android 4.4 KitKat as its stock operating system.
