AT&T has started rolling out the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for its Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 tablets.

The network carrier, however, did not mention why it decided to skip version 5.0 and went straight for the latest version of the Lollipop for the device.

Since May of this year, the unlocked version of the Wi-Fi-exclusive and LTE-capable variants of the Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 have been receiving the Android 5.0 Lollipop update. However, this firmware upgrade never arrived for the AT&T versions of the device, GSM Arena reported.

Instead, the company decided to roll out update 5.1.1.

According to the update's changelog posted on AT&T's support page, users can download the latest software upgrade as an over-the-air-file. But since the roll out is being conducted in stages, not all users will be able to get the update for their devices at the same time.

As for those who can upgrade their devices, they will be informed by AT&T through a notification. But before starting the download and installation procedures, they must first make sure that they are connected to a secure and stable Wi-Fi network and that their devices have sufficient battery life.

They should also backup their files before upgrading their devices' software.

The latest Lollipop update for the Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 comes with a variety of new features. These include an updated Quick Settings menu which will allow users to easily manage their Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections.

The update also features additional customization options for the notifications, screen pinning and alarm settings. In addition, through the update, the devices will have better memory management as well as new security software.

Also, since the firmware upgrade is the latest version of the Lollipop, it features more animations and themes than the Android 5.0 Lollipop update.

AT&T, however, noted that some apps that were pre-loaded in the device will be removed once the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update is installed. These include the WatchON, Beats Music and Famigo apps.

The Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 was officially released by Samsung in May of last year. With a 10.1-inch display, it is the largest variant in the company's Galaxy Tab 4 line.

It is powered by the Snapdragon 400 processor from Qualcomm and packs 1GB of RAM and 16 or 32GB of expandable internal storage. The tablet also features a 3.15-megapixel main camera paired with a 1.3-megapixel front shooter.

Upon its release, the tablet came with the Android 4.4.2 KitKat as its stock operating system.
