Man Commits Suicide at San Francisco Bay Rapid Transit Embarcadero BART Station

Embarcadero station's trains came to a screeching halt as a man died from what is reported to be "an apparent suicide" on Monday, Aug. 24 in the San Francisco Bay Area. According to the San Francisco Fire Department, the man leapt from a BART platform and jumped in front of an arriving train.

"There is a major delay at Embarcadero in the SFO, Millbrae, Daly City and East Bay directions due to a major medical emergency. Trains are not stopping at Embarcadero until further notice," stated BART's website on Monday. The news was confirmed by San Francisco BART on Twitter.

"Yes, we do have a fatality at the Embarcadero station," tweeted San Francisco BART on Monday afternoon.

The man collided with a Dublin/Pleasanton bound train at approximately 1:25 p.m. BART spokesman Jim Allison said that all lines that run through Embarcadero station "are being turned around."

Earlier on Monday, there was a police chase through an East Bay BART transit tunnel near Lake Merritt. It was a separate incident that occurred at 11:43 a.m. A robber tried to steal a cellphone and was reprimanded by the police.
The man ran and jumped into the train tracks to elude the officers in pursuit.

The police caught the robber and arrested him near the Lake Merritt and West Oakland stations. The Fremont and Dublin/Pleasanton bound trains were shut down for about 20 minutes.
