Galaxy Note 5 Reviews & Features: Phablet’s S Pen Design Makes It Vulnerable to Damages

Samsung Galaxy Note 4

Various sources have pointed out that Samsung's new Galaxy Note 5 phablet has a serious design flaw regarding its stylus pen.

According to reports, if inserted the wrong way, the stylus pen could permanently damage the device's auto-eject mechanism.

Samsung's latest flagship phablet was unveiled during the Unpacked event held on Aug. 13. But, even before the device's launch, the public already got a glimpse of its features through leaks.

One of these features is the stylus pen and its compartment. As previously reported, Samsung went with an auto-eject design mechanism instead of a magnetic one. Although this still provides users an efficient way to take out the S Pen from the device, one wrong move could instantly damage it.

According to NDTV, unlike previous Galaxy Note models, the latest version comes with a redesigned stylus pen with symmetrical ends. However, because of this design, users could make the mistake of inserting the S Pen the wrong way. Also, users will not feel any resistance when they mistakenly insert the stylus accessory in the opposite direction.

Once this happens, it will get stuck inside its compartment because it won't fit properly with the locking mechanism. Using force to pull out the S Pen could damage the detection mechanism, which works with an app every time the accessory is removed from its compartment, according to 9to5Google.

Reports about the design flaw have already reached Samsung, which immediately issued a statement regarding the issue.

According to the South Korean tech firm, in order to avoid breaking the S Pen or its detection mechanism, users should just closely follow the instructions in the device's manual.

"We highly recommend our Galaxy Note 5 users to follow the instructions in the user guide to ensure they do not experience such an unexpected scenario caused by reinserting the S Pen in the other way around," the company told The Verge.

Based on Samsung's statements, it appears the company has no plans to issue a recall for the device. This does not come as a surprise since it could take Samsung a long time to redesign the S Pen or its compartment for all of the Galaxy Note 5 users.

Instead, just like what the company said, users should be mindful when using the phablet's stylus pen. They should make sure that they are inserting the accessory into its compartment in the proper way to avoid damaging their devices.
