HTC One A9 Release Date & Rumors: HTC Teases Upcoming Smartphone Model; ‘Aero’ to Launch During IFA?

HTC has been teasing about a new smartphone model that could hopefully save the company's reputation from the disappointing One M9 flagship handset.

Rumored as the HTC One A9, the company said that the new handset will be introduced on September 6, 9to5Google reported.

This date falls within the schedule of the upcoming IFA event that will take place in Berlin. Since this annual conference has been the main stage for various tech firms to unveil their new devices, it makes sense for HTC to take advantage of the upcoming event.

Earlier this week, HTC CEO Cher Wang shared through his Weibo account a teaser image of an unknown yet new smartphone model. Although the executive did not mention the name of the device, various sources speculated that it could be the One A9.

Previously, this model was codenamed as the Aero. It also appeared in a recently leaked video which reportedly came from HTC's testing facility. Based on the clip, the devices sports a differently designed speaker grill compared to other HTC One handsets. Also, the positioning of its front-camera is similar to that of the teased image by Wang.

As for its other specs, Phone Arena noted that the HTC One A9 is expected to feature a screen resolution of 1080x1920 pixels. Its touch screen will also be protected by Gorilla Glass 4.

Although the exact specs of the device are still unclear, hopefully, they will be enough to save the company and restore its status as one of the top smartphone sellers.

Its current flagship handset, the HTC One M9, turned out to be a flop after several owners complained about issues with the device and its disappointing features.

Due to the company's low sales, it announced last month that it is planning to layoff 15 percent of its entire workforce. This could affect around 2,300 people since according to The Verge, HTC has around 15,680 employees.

Then, this week, Venture Beat reported that HTC is planning to let go 600 more of its employees from its factories in Taiwan.

According to the company, the mass layoff is part of its efforts to lower its overall operating expenses. It is targeting to reduce it by 34 percent and will continue its cost-cutting measures until the first quarter of 2016.

Aside from job cuts, HTC is also planning on venturing onto other consumer tech fields to improve its sales.

"We need a flexible and dynamic organization to ensure we can take advantage of all of the exciting opportunities in the connected lifestyle space," Wang said according to The Verge.
