The Sean Daniel Company, the production firm behind "The Mummy" series starring Brendan Fraser, has confirmed that it will handle the full-length live-action film adaptation of "The Witcher" franchise.

The upcoming film is set to come out sometime in 2017.

However, as noted by the production firm, the project will not focus on "The Witcher" games or the series of novels they were based on. Instead, The Sean Daniel Company, in partnership with Polish firm Platige Films, will center on the short films created by Andrzej Sapkowski, author of "The Witcher" novels, Gamespot reported.

Like the stories "The Witcher" and "Lesser Evil" from "The Last Wish" collection, the upcoming film will center on witch and monster hunter Geralt of Rivia, who is also the lead character in "The Witcher" video game series.

"Andrzej Sapkowski's novels are conquering international fantasy book markets and his short story collection, "The Last Wish," had been placed on the New York Times bestseller list," Platige Films said in a press release.

"The hero created by Sapkowski, Geralt the witcher, is a monster hunter with supernatural abilities," the company continued. "He is a creature suspended between two worlds - the human and the magical. 'The Witcher' saga is already being compared to the hugely popular 'Game of Thrones.'"

Details about the upcoming project are still vague but according to Plagtige Films, the movie will serve as an introduction to the rich lore of "The Witcher" franchise. This could mean that the project might eventually turn into a trilogy.

Also, the company has not yet mentioned the names of the actors who will participate in the film. But, the studio noted that it will be helmed by Tomasz Baginski, the director behind the Oscar-nominated animated film "The Cathedral." He also directed the intro cinematics for the games "The Witcher" and "The Witcher 2."

For the film, Baginski will follow the script currently being drafted by Thania St. John, the scribe behind various television programs such as "21 Jump Street," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Roswell" and "Drop Dead Diva."

According to Platige Films, the upcoming "The Witcher" movie, which does not have an official title yet, will be released globally sometime in 2017, PC Gamer has learned.

The first "The Witcher" game came out in 2007 for the Microsoft Windows and OS X platforms. Its sequels, "The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings" and "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt," were released in 2009 and 2015 respectively.
