Filming Alejandro González Iñárritu's ambitious new film "The Revenant" became quite the experience for veteran actor Leonardo DiCaprio, and one of the most unforgettable experiences he had while making it was eating real bison liver.

"The bad part is the membrane around it," DiCaprio told Varietyin an interview. "It's like a balloon. When you bite into it, it bursts in your mouth."

DiCaprio knows that the movie has generated quite the buzz because of the difficult working conditions they had to endure, and he cannot help but agree that it was an experience that not everybody is willing to go through. But for him, everything was totally worth it even if he caught the flu several times while working on it.

"There's been a lot said about the movie and the difficulties making it, and how meticulous Alejandro is with his vision. But to me, that's the (expletive) that should be praised," DiCaprio said. "I don't want to work with somebody who isn't thinking of every possible aspect of what's up on the screen. I think there's a hunger for audiences to see something completely extreme and difficult."

He even compared filming "The Revenant" to "the real wild, wild West, in the sense that there were all these cultures merging together in this lawless land."

Another thing that DiCaprio had to maintain during filming was a long beard. He even jokingly compared his beard to a wife.

"I had that beard for a year and a half," the actor shared. "It becomes like a spouse. You sleep with it. It was like shaving off dreads," he shared.

Meanwhile, other stars of the film also have nothing but positive to say about "The Revenant." Tom Hardy, who portrays John Fitzgerald, the man Hugh Glass (DiCaprio) is looking for said that the film and the whole filming process was "completely awesome."

As for Sean Penn, the actor said that they all found the film amazing, although they are not completely sure how audiences will respond to it.

"It's hard to say what will happen, and whether the brilliance of this film will be rewarded relative to its costs," he said. "I'd like to think we're a culture that values its art enough to recognize we need this."

Iñárritu refused to give any spoilers, but he did tease that the big bear fight is something that will titillate audiences.

"The Revenant" will make its way to cinemas on December 25, 2015.
