Boxing News: Canelo Alvarez Pushing for Miguel Cotto Fight on Cinco De Mayo Weekend

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is considering several options for his next fight, but the former light middleweight world champion reiterated that he is interested in facing Miguel Cotto in 2015.

Alvarez, who holds an impressive 44-1-1 record with 31 knockouts, said that Cotto is still on top of his list of possible opponents because he wants to give boxing fans the fight that they want next year.

Alvarez said that a fight against Cotto will be big, considering the fact that Cotto, the reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight champion, is known as one of the top fighters in the world today.

The 34-year-old Puerto Rican boasts a 39-4 record with 32 knockout wins, and is coming off an impressive victory against then-middleweight champion Sergio Martinez in June.

"Cotto is a great champion, he is a fighter who has a lot of history, a well known name," Alvarez told BoxingScene. "He is champion in another division. I love it because it's a natural fight. People ask about it, because it's a fight where the styles are going to work together very well and I would love to fight him to give the people a good battle."

Canelo previously said that he would love to go up against Cotto on Cinco de Mayo weekend on May 2, but there are doubts if the fight date will be available after Floyd Mayweather Jr. declared that he won't give up the date to Alvarez after fighting on Cinco de Mayo weekends over the past three years.

Mayweather is planning to face Manny Pacquiao on May 2 next year, but Alvarez insisted that he is determined to take the fight date from Mayweather, including Mexican holiday weekends in September, saying that those dates belong to Mexican fighters like him.

"I want to fight in May and I'm going to do it," Alvarez said. "It's a very important date for me and I will not move from it. I want to retake the Mexican dates because they are very important to us. I'm going to fight in May and September."

Alvarez is coming off convincing victories against Alfredo Angulo and Erislandy Lara earlier this year, bouncing back from his close defeat to Mayweather in their light middleweight title fight in September last year.
