| ¡ãParent Seminar at New Vision Church |
Among relationships that the immigrant society must take concern one of them is ¡®relationship of parent and child¡¯ that overlaps with generational and cultural differences.
Especially relationship with the teenage youth which is sensitive to nature and easily get hurt is an aspect that the immigrant society parents face the most difficulty.
To save from this difficulty the New Vision Church held a seminar regarding ¡®raising teenage children in an era of globalism.¡¯ At the seminar Dr. Roland Kim of clinical psychology was invited as the speaker for the seminar. The main session will start at 12:30 p.m. in the Lighthouse Chapel for both Sr. and Jr. High, and then will meet separately from 1:15 to 3 p.m. in the Lighthouse Chapel and Vision Chapel respectively.
At the seminar presented methods of understanding and solving the issues of discord and conflict between teenage children Dr. Kim explained, ¡°Saying good words that is disconnecting, pointing out, and advice towards children rather brings resentment.¡±
¡°During childhood the method of connecting with children is to spend time with them however during their adolescence it is to become their emotional friend. The best way to become their emotional friend is empathy.¡±
Specific methods of empathy are to say, ¡°When dealing with the conflict of children first speak about their emotion and briefly mention the realistic situation. For example when you see your child happily saying ¡®Mom, I got a B!¡¯ rather than saying ¡®You won¡¯t be able to go to UC with that grade¡¯ first you must say ¡®You must be really happy¡¯, ¡®You must be satisfied¡¯ showing empathy.
Dr. Roland Kim who is a clinical psychologist and education professional completed Economics graduate and doctor¡¯s degree at UCLA and in office as adjunct professor at Biola University Rosemead School of Psychology, for 15 years worked as a bilingual youth counselor and counseling.
