Android 5.1 Lollipop Release Date: Here Are Update's New Features

Android 5.1 Lollipop has just been announced a couple of weeks ago, and it brings a number of new features and improvements to the world's most beloved mobile operating system.

However, was Google really prepared to announce the new update, or was it just pressured to get some attention to itself especially after Apple announced a number of new devices?

Android fans would definitely find out once they get their devices updated to the latest version.

So what's new in Android 5.1 Lollipop?

Quick Settings now have more Wi-Fi and Bluetooth options

In previous versions of Android, users would need to choose settings first before they can tweak some Wi-Fi and Bluetooth-related settings. Not anymore. In the new 5.1 update, there will be Wi-Fi and Bluetooth buttons on the quick settings menu. Clicking on these boxes will drop down a new menu for Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection and security management.

Swiping notifications will only 'save them for later'

In the new version, swiping notifications sideways would not delete the notification, but would just save it for later viewing. This will definitely be handy for people who do not want to get disturbed in whatever they're doing (working or playing), and just check out the saved notifications later.

HD Voice Support

In their report, this is one of the main highlights of the new Android 5.1 update. It allows the device to recognize HD Voice in T-Mobile or Verizon Nexus 6 devices.

Anti-Theft Device Protection

Once only available for the Nexus 6, this feature will require thieves to key in the last password in the user's Google account before they can delete all the information. It is automatically enabled in all Android 5.1-powered devices.

Dual-SIM support

Finally, the new Android 5.1 Lollipop update will enable supported devices to run on dual-SIM. The first version of Lollipop did not support this, which made some Android fans dismayed. Fortunately, Google has already fixed it and will now offer dual-SIM compatibility on newer smartphones to be released this year.

Recognizing wireless connections without automatically connecting to them

In the report, the new Android 5.1 update will now enable phones to scan their environment for wireless connections without triggering the auto-connect feature of previous versions. This way, people will be able to choose the connections they would join more carefully.

These are all the major changes Google included with the Android 5.1 Lollipop update. While this may not be much, it is still a decent update that will benefit its users. To check out the minor updates and changes of Android 5.1, here is the report
