James Cameron, co-writer and director of "The Terminator" and "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" had pretty glowing reviews for the upcoming "Terminator: Genisys" film directed by Alan Taylor, saying that he felt like a complete "fanboy" while watching it.
"I had no idea what to expect sitting down. I wasn't involved in the making of the film. I didn't direct it, I didn't write it. I'm just a fanboy. I'm in a dark theater, the movie starts...And I start to see things that I recognize," he said. "And all of a sudden it just swirls and I'm going on a journey."
Cameron felt that the whole movie's approach was very respectful to the first two films, and that they managed to re-invigorate the franchise of "The Terminator," calling it a "renaissance" of films.
There is also a reason why the original "Terminator" films became movie classics, he added, and that is because they have characters that people have grown to love and respect.
"The new film, which in my mind I think of as the third film, we see Arnold taking the character even further," said Cameron.
On the other hand, the filmmaker said that everybody responds to Sarah Connor because she is a symbol of strength and love. "For women, I think she represents some kind of empowerment and yet there is vulnerability there because that strength comes at a price," he observed.
The whole franchise also has some pretty shocking villains too, and "Terminator: Genisys" might just provide the best one yet. (Warning: Spoiler ahead! Please read at your own risk).
"You went from the first film, the Terminator being the worst bad (guy) in history, to the second film, him being almost a father figure. The idea of taking John Connor and flipping him into the bad guy - it's pretty cool because you get a rift against expectations. It's all about the twists!" he said.
There is no doubt that Cameron is a huge fan of "Terminator: Genisys," and he has no doubt that fans of the franchise and new viewers alike will fall in love with it too.
"If you like 'The Terminator' films, you will love this movie," he guaranteed.
The film stars Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese, Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, Jason Clarke as John Connor, Byung hun-Lee as T-1000, Nolan Gross as Skynet, J.K. Simmons as Detective O'Brien, and many others.
It will hit cinemas on July 1, 2015.
