The wait in between "The Big Bang Theory" season 8 and 9 has got to be the most difficult yet, especially when the previous season finale closed with Amy Farrah Fowler breaking up with her boyfriend Sheldon Cooper via Skype.

After the sad conversation he had with Amy, Sheldon, pulled out something from his drawer, talked to his Gollum figuring and asked, "Well, Gollum, you're an expert on rings, what do I do with this one?" And he opened up a case with a ring inside.

Many people immediately jumped to the conclusion that Sheldon has plans of proposing to Amy, but the show's stars, particularly Mayim Bialik (who plays Amy) said that there are a ton of reasons why Sheldon has a ring, but it's not necessarily for a proposal.

During the recent San Diego Comic-Con, showrunner Steve Molaro said that fans will finally have their answer with regards to the ring when "The Big Bang Theory" returns to CBS on September 21 this year, according to the Business Insider.

"The answer will be in the premiere episode of season nine," he simply said.

In a different interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Molaro said that Sheldon and Amy might have broken up, but the two will still talk to each other occasionally. Season 9 will highlight their relationship and it's either make or break for "Shamy" at this point.

"I don't know exactly what's going to happen but Sheldon is clearly fond of her," he said. "I don't think they're done speaking by any means. He's so fond of her - something is going to happen between them, I'm sure."

As for the mystery behind the ring, Molaro teased that he has an idea what it's for, but he refused to reveal it just yet. "I don't know if the length of time matters so much as the situation where Amy has taken a legitimate step back that he was not expecting. That's really the headline here that we'll be digging into," he said.

Meanwhile, "The Big Bang Theory" writer Eric Kaplan said that Amy's backstory will be explored in the next season. All fans know is that she's a genius just like her boyfriend who had a tough time making friends and fitting in. So when asked if anything new develops for Amy, Kaplan answered: "I'd love to know those things as well. We live these characters week to week. You may learn she had a great, great uncle who didn't play by the rules."
