'Project CARS’ for Nintendo’s Wii U Cancelled by Developers

Bandai Namco, the distributor behind "Project CARS," announced that the development of the game for Nintendo's Wii U console has been cancelled.

According to the company, the console's currently hardware simply cannot handle the quality of the game, Nintendo Life reported.

"Project CARS," the racing simulation game developed by Slightly Mad Studios, came out in May of this year for the Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms. Originally, the game was also supposed to come out for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 but those versions were also cancelled by the developers.

Given this trend, it seems the game is only meant to be released on high-end next-gen platforms.

Development of the Wii U version of the game began earlier this year after a successful crowd-funded campaign organized by the studio.

However, in May, studio head Ian Bell reported that the developers are experiencing problems in designing the game for Nintendo's console.

The executive also clarified that during the game's crowd-funding, the studio was not focused on releasing the game for the Wii U. Instead, they only viewed the Wii U edition of "Project CARS" as another option for the game's release.

Then, just recently, Bandai Namco released a statement announcing the game's cancellation.

"Despite much perseverance on the Wii U version of 'Project CARS' we will no longer be actively pursuing development on it as the quality does not meet our own high standards nor our intended vision for the title on this platform," a representative from the company told Polygon.

"We eagerly look forward to any announcement of further hardware from Nintedo but right now 'Project CARS' is simply too much for Wii U despite our efforts," the spokesperson continued.

The official announcement regarding the game's cancellation serves as another major blow to owners of the Wii U. Previously, it was reported that another major game slated to be released exclusively for Nintendo's console has been delayed.

According to Nintendo, it has decided to push back the projected 2015 release date of "Legend of Zelda" in order to provide developers more time to work on the game.

This was further confirmed by the company's decision to skip this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) for the presentation of the game.

However, the status of "Project CARS" for the Wii U, "The Legend of "Zelda" is still being developed and is expected to come out sometime next year. Rumors even suggest that the game might also debut on the NX, a new console that Nintendo is reportedly targeting to release in July, 2016.
