Several Christian ministries are planning to launch a number of prayer movements during the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. Many believers are expecting this year's Olympics to be a good strategic period to spread the Gospel to the countless people who will be gathering in Russia to cheer for their countries.
Athletes In Action, a ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ (Cru) and a gathering of Christian athletes worldwide is planning to gather prayer partners through their website. Each participant will be receiving a list of 3 to 5 athletes who will be performing in Sochi. The prayer partner will not only prayer for those specific people, but also for the countries that the athletes represent.
Another major organization taking part in this movement is a group called Engage Sochi. This group will be establishing a calendar with daily prayer topics for participating prayer partners. The major topics that will be prayed for are things such as people who participate, spectate, or work for this year's Olympic games would get to know Christ. A ministry insider also emphasized that this is the first time Russia will be hosting the event since the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Evangelical Christians are a great minority in Sochi, and he stated that through the games, the city will experience revival.
Meanwhile, Christians are also praying for the safety of all people during the Olympics, particularly from terrorist attacks. Already, terrorist groups such as the Black Widows have already hinted possible attacks.
