The Maze Runner series will end with the upcoming third installment, titled Maze Runner: The Death Cure, according to Digital Spy.

Wes Ball, the director of the Maze Runner series, disclosed that the franchise will not be part of the Hollywood trend that divides trilogies into four parts or more. In the interview, Ball revealed that the films, The Maze Runner, The Scorch Trials, and The Death Cure, will be sufficient for them to tell the entire story of Thomas, played by Teen Wolf star Dylan O'Brien, and his friends.

"I think three is the number; beginning, middle, end, that's it," Ball shared in the report. "Four? I think there's something off about four," he added. He went on to state that if the decision is entirely up to him, then "there's three movies basically." He then categorically squashed all rumors of a possible fourth or more installment.

"We're not going to [split a book in two], no way," Ball said, effectively refuting all speculations regarding the series' future. He then added, "I think three movies is the right number, Star Wars!"

The same news was confirmed by a Twitter message posted by Exhibitor Relations. "Listen up, shanks--MAZE RUNNER: THE DEATH CURE drops Feb. 17, 2017. And no, it won't be split into 2 parts. Good that," the site announced in its official account, wittingly using the franchise jargon made popular by the characters in the book.

Apart from O'Brien, The Maze Runner also featured Aml Ameen who starred in Lee Daniels' The Butler, Beyond the Lights, and Lila & Eve as well as Ki Hong Lee from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, The Stanford Prison Experiment, and Blue Bloods. Blake Cooper, who appeared in Parental Guidance, It's Supernatural, and Necessary Roughness, was featured in the movie as well.

Will Poulter, who rose to fame for his role in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader as well as gained wider popularity for starring with Jennifer Aniston, Jason Sudeikis, and Emma Roberts in the comedy film We're the Millers, was also part of the cast. The group was joined by Thomas Brodie-Sangster who is part of Thunderbirds Are Go, Wolf Hall, Game of Thrones, Phineas and Ferb. Meanwhile, one of the female leads of the franchise is Kaya Scodelario who recently bagged a role in the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

James Dashner, the author of the series, also released a prequel novel for The Maze Runner, titled The Kill Order.
