Two months after The CW's hit series "The Flash' ended its first season, fans can now look forward to the return of Grant Gustin as Barry Allen in a newly-designed superhero costume.
In addition, "The Flash' season two seeks to expand the DC Universe in the small screen.
In the first season, the DC Comics TV series followed the story of Barry as he obtained superspeed powers to the point of becoming capable of traveling through time. The show had also put forward the concept of the Speed Force.
Moreover, the final episode showed Barry addressing the emotional and moral concerns when it comes to altering his timeline and changing the past.
Looking into the second season, it is already known that the series will explore a multiverse - a universe comprised of multiple and alternate timelines. At the San Diego Comic-Con, Gustin and "The Flash' showrunner Andrew Kreisberg dropped hints as to how time travel and the multiverse will be incorporated into the program's second run.
All in all, Kreisberg explained the significance of integrating an emotional component into the story despite an increased focus on logic and science.
"I think when you do anything like time travel, obviously time travel is not real, so everybody sort of has their theory on how it works," the TV writer and producer said. "I think what was important for us was that it"¦more than making logical sense, it had to make emotional sense. As long as you understood what's happening to characters emotionally and as long as you understood what the stakes were"¦"
Overall, the second season will place emphasis on an alternative timeline, completely different from the conventional one.
"We feel like we have our roles"¦there certainly is cause and effect, that time is not immutable, that time can change," Kreisberg added. "Our entire series takes place in an alternative timeline from the one that should have existed."
Certain relationships, such as those between Barry and his friend and potential romantic interest Iris West (Candice Patton), may not be carrying the same emotional power as others.
Nonetheless, Barrry's bond with his mother, his father Henry Allen (John Wesley Shipp) and Joe West (Jesse L. Martin) created a strong emotional foundation for the first season.
Gustin also opened up about how the multiverse will bring on a strong impact on certain storylines from season one, such as a new version of Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh) to be introduced from a different timeline.
When it comes to the introduction of Jay Garrick (Teddy Sears), the first hero to take the name of The Flash in the DC Comics, Gustin said fans should expect him in the second season "sooner rather than later, potentially."
As for guest appearances, Michael Ironside will reportedly take on a cameo role as Lewis Snart, the father of Wenworth Miller's Leonard Snart, also known as Captain Cold.
Peyton List is also set to appear as Lisa Snart aka the Golden Glider, sister of Captain Cold. Both are known to be supervillains and enemies of the Scarlet Speedster.
"The Flash' returns for season two on Tuesday, October 6, on The CW.
