Apple Granted Patent to Challenge GoPro Cameras

Apple has recently been granted a patent developed specifically for a wearable camera that is expected to bring in competition for the all-around cameras manufactured by GoPro.

Recognizing the weak points of GoPro cameras, the patent shares information regarding a camera system that can be placed on various surfaces including bike helmets and diving masks, to name a few.

The patent had first been filed by Kodak last 2012 and was eventually acquired by Apple. In the description, the patent aims to overcome the "wind resistance flaw" that has been recognized in certain GoPro cameras.

GoPro shares have reportedly gone down by 15 percent. Entering into the action capture device market may also bring about competition for Polaroid Corporation, which is known for developing tiny and vibrant Cube cameras.

In the application submitted by Apple at the U.S. Patents and Trademark Office, the newly patented camera system will also be compatible with underwater activities for users to take photos and record sounds. Moreover, the camera may come with a remote control that provides a status display along with user control and battery supply.

However, JMP Securities analyst Alex Gauna stated that it may be untimely for Apple to develop and release a wearable camera.

"It does not seem to me that launching an action camera accessory is the most logical product extension for Apple to pursue right now," Gauna said.

Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter also explained that Apple's new venture may bring about an effect on GoPro similar to the impact of the iPhone on other camera makers. The effect is that GoPro and other similar companies may have a reduced number of cameras sold but "the number isn't zero."

Looking into the videos taken by GoPro's cameras, these have already gained millions of views and shares online. From famous athletes to personal users who have taken interest in outdoor activities and extreme sports, GoPro cameras have already attained considerable popularity for their special features and quality performance.

Known for developing cameras that can be mounted on just about any surface for outdoor activities and extreme sports, including surfboards, skateboards and motorbikes, Gauna further asserts that GoPro is still being acknowledged as the leading brand in the category for action capture devices.
