With 2016 filled to the brim with superhero movies, it appears that Channing Tatum has joined the bandwagon as the 'Magic Mike' actor shows fans and followers a glimpse of what could be expected from his X-Men character, Gambit.
In an interview with Empire Online, Tatum disclosed just how connected he feels with Gambit. "I love Gambit," he said. "I grew up in the South; my father's from Louisiana. We'd go to New Orleans and I heard all the dialects. It felt so different from the rest of America; it has its own ancient culture," he elucidated.
"So I identified with that," the actor added, referring to the fact that Gambit or Remy Etienne LeBeau's Cajun roots. He went on to say, "And he always felt the most real of the X-Men to me. He's kind of a tortured soul and he's not a good guy. But he's not a bad guy, either. He walks his own path. And of course he plays cards and drinks and is a martial-arts badass!"
Apart from those mentioned by Tatum, Gambit is actually able to "use his power simply by looking at an object that he wished to charge, including living tissue. Gambit could also manipulate the potency of the energy release and could even exercise a measure of control over time."
Meanwhile, Tatum revealed that "Josh Zetumer just turned in the first draft of the script, and it's killer." The actor further shared, "None of us were sure how he was going to deal with the X-Men world. But we're going to be changing some of the tropes of these movies."
Tatum has been consistently vocal about the fact that he wants this film to be some sort of an anti-hero movie. He said, "It's always about saving the world (Laughs), but maybe we're going to shift things a little bit. There's so many ways you can take [an origin story]." Citing some of the possible films where the Gambit story will take inspiration from, Tatum stated, "You could do it like Batman Begins, or a different take and go the Guardians of the Galaxy route. All I can say is, I'm super excited."
Tatum's 'Gambit' standalone film is scheduled to hit the theatres on October 17, 2016.
