"Harry Potter" alum and UN ambassadress for gender equality Emma Watson has taken on the role of the bookish Hermione Granger, then the free-spirited Sam in "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," and on to Belle in the Disney live action movie "Beauty and the Beast."
She even played troubled young girl Angela Gray in the thriller called "Regression," which she starred in together with Ethan Hawke. But what does the 25 year old British actress consider as her most difficult role?
During an interview with the Daily Mail UK, Watson shared her experience playing a dowdy nun in the £20 million political thriller "Colonia Dignidad," saying it was her most challenging role yet.
"It's the hardest part I've ever had to play. But also the most satisfying. It felt like the right thing to do," she said.
"Colonia Dignidad" is directed by award-winning director Florian Gallenberger, who also wrote the film together with Torsten Wenzel. Aside from Watson, Daniel Brühl and Michael Nygvist also starred in the film.
It is based on the true events set in 1973 in Chile, and centers on the story about a German woman who searches for her husband, who was kidnapped by General Augusto Pinochet's secret police service called the Dirección de Inteligencia Nacional (DINA), or in English called the National Intelligence Directorate.
Watson portrayed Lena, wife of Daniel, who was forced to joined the cult "Colonia Dignidad" just to rescue her husband. Brühl played her husband Daniel, the German citizen who was kidnapped the protest against Pinochet, and lastly Nygvist portrayed Schäfer, the leader of "Colonia Dignidad."
Watson has a lot of things to thank the "Harry Potter" films for, especially since she got her big break in Hollywood for portraying one of Harry's best friends Hermione. But since the franchise wrapped up, Watson has been keen on making a name for herself separate from the world of Harry Potter.
Her past film roles have been undeniably good, but "Colonia Dignidad" is her true claim to display her acting prowess.
A source even told the Nation: "Emma is determined to distance herself from 'Harry Potter' and this is her big push to be taken seriously. She gives an amazing performance and is being tipped as an Oscar contender. She is dowdy in this movie - she's undergone a make-under."
"Colonia Dignidad" opens in Germany next month and in Britain later this year.
