As the official "Star Wars: The Force Awakens' premiere draws near, fans continue to question what is in store for Luke Skywalker. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, helmer J.J. Abrams discussed how Mark Hamill's character had been a big challenge for him to direct.

"It was the thing that struck me the hardest, which was the idea that doing a story that took place nearly 40 years after Jedi meant that there would be a generation for whom Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Leia would be as good as myth," Abrams shared.

The director used Daisy Ridley's Rey as an example, asking what a scavenger that lives on an abandoned planet think of the man that helped bring down the Empire decades ago.

"The idea that someone like that would begin to learn that the Jedi were real, and that the Force exists, and that there's a power in the universe that sounds fanciful but is actually possible, was an incredibly intriguing notion."

Abrams also touched on the subject of the official "Star Wars: The Force Awakens' poster in which Luke is evidently absent. The director assured fans that, despite having a "busy" poster, Hamill's character is "a very important aspect of the story."

Former Stormtrooper Finn (John Boyega) is well aware about who Luke Skywalker is due to his Stormtrooper training, although the film's journey is the main factor that will influence his change of mind, particularly after he obtains Luke's original lightsaber.

"In terms of the Force, and the magical stuff that happens, that is the point where Finn kind of questions what is what. What is the Force, what part does Luke Skywalker play in all of this?" Boyega said.

Meanwhile, some fans have begun to speculate that Luke Skywalker, the only remaining Jedi, will ultimately cross over to the dark side. Others even suggested the possibility of Hamill's character being the main antagonist in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens,' and that he is indeed the person behind the mask worn by Kylo Ren.

In addition, there have been rumors that a new family bond between Rey and Kylo Ren could be revealed, suggesting that the two could be sister and brother. They are even speculated to be the children of either Luke Skywalker or Princess Leia and Han Solo.

However, although such possibility could exist, the rumor that Luke is their father has debunked because Jedis are often single, except for Luke and Leia's father Anakin Skywalker, who made the decision to secretly marry Senator Amidala at the end of "Episode II.'

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens' makes its way to theaters on Dec. 16, 2015.
