EA Sports confirmed that a new "PGA Tour" game is coming and it will feature the current World Number One golfer Rory McIlroy.
"Rory McIlroy PGA Tour," which features the Irish athlete on the cover, will arrive for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles sometime in June 2015, Gamerant reported.
McIlroy's arrival to the "PGA Tour" series marks the end of EA's partnership with renowned professional golfer Tiger Woods.
Woods has been the main feature of the studio's "PGA Tour" franchise for 16 years ever since the first game, "Tiger Woods PGA Tour 99," debuted in 1998 for the PC and PlayStation platforms. EA dropped Woods from the video game series in 2013.
"EA Sports and Tiger Woods have made a mutual decision to end our partnership, which includes Tiger's named 'PGA Tour' golf game," the company said in a statement. "We've always been big fans of Tiger and we wish him continued success in all his future endeavors."
The 2015 edition of the latest "PGA Tour" game will mark McIlroy's first project in EA's franchise. Aside from the significant change in terms of the main feature, "Rory McIlroy PGA Tour" is also powered by a new game engine and will deliver a different kind of game play experience, according to Game Spot.
The latest "PGA Tour" title is the first sports-themed game from EA that was developed using Frostbite, which is the same engine the company uses for its "Need for Speed" and "Battlefield" games.
With the Frostbite engine, EA was able to remove the loading times between holes for the "Rory McIlroy PGA Tour" and enhance the overall graphic quality of the latest installment of the game series.
"This new toolset allows the development team to create beautiful new environments, featuring the most detailed courses in franchise history," EA said in a statement. "Frostbite also renders the entire course at once, eliminating load times between holes and allowing users to play their shot from almost any location."
